If your medical model includes either of the dental arches, and the arch to be studied has heavily restored teeth (large amalgams, metal or PFM crowns, Zirconia crowns), then we need to create a custom filter to use during the segmentation process. This involves taking an impression of the area involved.
Facilities / equipment needed:
- ⁃ CBCT scanner.
- ⁃ Clinical setting where either:
- ⁃ An impression can be made (and poured up if alginate), or
- ⁃ An intraoral scanner is available.
Items required:
For CBCT:
- 1) Cotton rolls
- 2) For Clinical:
- ⁃ A PVS impression of the arch in question or
- ⁃ A model of the arch in question
Procedure:
CBCT Scan:
- ⁃ If the patient’s opposing arch has a removable prosthesis, he/she should be wearing it.
- ⁃ Place cotton roles in the vestibule(s) adjacent to edentulous areas (this is optional, but it helps if the scan is “noisy”; helping us to merge the model based on soft tissue).
- ⁃ Patient should bite on additional cotton rolls in the posterior quadrants. It is important that the patient NOT be in occlusion during the scan.
- ⁃ Field of View (FOV) should be the same as the volume of the model you wish us to produce.
- ⁃ Prepare CBCT san for Export to Us:
- ⁃ Ask the CBCT technician to give/send you files in one of these two formats:
- ⁃ Standard DICOM SET (A folder with hundreds of .DCM files, one for each slice), or
- ⁃ Anatomage Invivo (.INV file)
Scan of the Model:
- ⁃ Perform any of the following:
- ⁃ Scan the patient’s arch in question with your Intraoral Scanner.
- ⁃ Scan the poured up model with either your Intraoral Scanner or a Desktop Optical Scanner.
- ⁃ Send the model or PVS impression to your dental lab for optical scanning (or send that to us).
- ⁃ Perform a CBCT scan of the plaster model and export to us in DICOM. But keep in mind:
- ⁃ This is the least desirable approach. Try your best not to resort to this.
- ⁃ The denture model must be stone (not plaster) and poured up under vacuum.
